If you follow my Twitter feed (and why don’t you? www.twitter.com/MattBrianReed ), you know that I am a huge fan of the site www.lifehack.com . They continually provide excellent information and inspiration to make life better in all areas. This series is inspired by this post by David Loker

When I first launched my coaching business, I had the opportunity to participate in group coaching. We were all working promoting our businesses and setting goals for what we hoped to accomplish. My coach asked me about my goal, “So Matt, what are your going to do as a reward if you hit your goal?

I was somewhat stunned by the notion. I hadn’t really given much thought to the matter. A reward for hitting my goal? Why would I do that? Isn’t the accomplishment a reward enough?

Not quite. We set goals to be successful and even create wise plans for getting there. Some goals are so ‘new’ to us that we can’t fully think of how good it would be to accomplish them. An earned reward can help us lock onto something that is tangible and desirable until we get to our finish line.

Rewards can also be beneficial when a goal/project might take a long time. Set ‘halftime’ goals to keep you motivated for the long project.

The rewards don’t have to be expensive…or they might be ‘big ticket’ items that will propel you to future success. Just pick SOMETHING that motivates you, put it in writing and go after your goals. Want to start running? Commit to buy yourself some new running shoes AFTER your first 5k. Have a goal to spend time with your kids? Promise yourself some ‘guilt-free’ time watching whatever you want if you do.

So, what is your goal? What are you going to do to celebrate once you reach it?

Big Question: Let me know about your goals and earned rewards in the comments below!

The mission of Matthew Reed Coaching is “To make the world a more effective and God honoring place, through coaching.” I love to help people genuinely experience the life they have always wanted. I’d be thrilled to be able to share with you the power of coaching.”

I don’t know how it works and maybe nobody knows how it works that when you put your goals on paper even when you have no idea how it will come together; it works. Setting rewards definitely helps…IF it is something that you really desire to do or desire to have…thanks Matthew!

I think that once they go on paper, they become real. Even if they are edited 100 times, they become actual tangible things once they are put in writing. Until they are real, they cannot be achieved no matter how great they are.

Interesting!  I haven’t set goals for years, because I could never reach them.  Perhaps they were too lofty?  I was reading a book the other day that said to write down your goals and read them every day…and your mind (I believe, with the help from God) will subconsciously make it happen.  What a great concept!  I think I will give it a try…adding a reward at the end doesn’t hurt either!

I fully believe in setting goals…and NOT reaching them. For instance, I didn’t hit my goal from the coaching group I mentioned above. But I made a HUGE dent in an important area for my coaching business…And the reward I put in place then is still a significant motivator for me!

I do reward myself. This year, it is an 11 day cruise to the Southern Caribbean.

I haven’t considered a reward to reaching a goal… but I’m definitely going to give it some good thought tonight before going to sleep!

This is such a simple concept, yet I think it’s lacking in my goals! “Earned reward can help us lock onto something that is tangible and desirable until we get to our finish line.” Thank you for the reminder Matthew!

I don’t think I’ve ever heard this Matt, which is amazing in itself. I guess my thinking was a lot like yours; isn’t achieving the goal it’s own reward? This has definitely made me think!

I know that having some ‘rewards’ along the way has certainly improved my motivation.

Matt, I recently learned about doing this and had the same initial thoughts as you.  However, now that I have done it, it’s amazing the difference it makes in propelling you towards the goal!  Great stuff, as usual :)
